I believe in integrating subject areas, including technology, to make learning meaningful for students. Good pedagogy, mixed with my own experience and creativity has helped me write a textbook for teachers. I am putting the finished touches on the book now. Student work is showcased as proof of my beliefs that work. My mantra is, "If you treat students as scholars, they will be scholars." I have taken part of every professional development opportunity throughout the years and have integrated all that I have learned. I have traveled extensively throughout the world to record aspects of world cultures in video and pictures to present visual introductions to my students, supported by the best of non-fiction and fiction. Teaching with a global focus made learning interesting and unique for the diverse groups of children in my class. My gurus for literacy are Stephanie Harvey and Lucy Calkins. They have helped me integrate the best of literacy with other subject areas. In 2009, I won the Social Studies Elementary Teacher from the National Council of Social Studies. I am particularly proud of this award as this has been my life's work. In my retirement, I want to continue to develop the very best curriculum to help teachers teach effectively. I have been known as the developer of a global curriculum for years with literacy as its center. I have also created an economic unit about Ghanaian cocoa beans and a civics unit about a successful school "kitchen" program in India that provides good nutrition for children. This program is now feeding many poor students all over India. If you feed tummies, you will feed their minds.
