Great ideas for student connectedness

Hafiz Usman Khalid, principal of Air Foundation School System in Phalia, Punjab, Pakistan, shared with Education World the most helpful instructional strategy used in their district during the past school year::

During the vacation, teachers were in touch with the students and their parents. Teachers made occasional calls to their students during vacations (e.g., birthdays, wishes for trips or tours, health wishes, etc.) which definitely leaves a very good impression and a sense of affiliation. When the students were back in school, we had a very strong plan to welcome them warmly. Teachers prepared some very interesting and beautiful wish cards for students and parents. Parents also completed a feedback form regarding the activities of their child during the vacation.

Students reviewed their whole vacation in the form of a report about the places they visited, people they met, activities they did, pictures etc. and submitted it to the school office within a week. Students were given a pack of worksheets to review the last academic work they had completed, for which there was a sort of competition held. A little reward system was also introduced in this week to boost the motivation of the students for learning.
