How do you track student growth throughout the year so that it makes sense, even to little ones and parents?

I am a EFL teacher in Argentina and I have 6 years old kids.
So I focus on very tangible items. And with small kids I do it informally.
For example: After some weeks seeing High frequency words we go to the Library and I ask them to pick up any book and write down on a paper as many of those words as they can find (they can repeat when they see them again). Afterwards I ask them if they could all find words (invariably they all have). And I ask: So you all read in English? Wowww... Anyone hasn´t read? You are doing so good! Keep it up!
Regarding parents I keep them inform on a weekly basis via our notebooks and then when they find the grades in black and white there are no surprises and everything is already understood.
