Kindle Fire

Join us in the Forums for a discussion of the just-announced Kindle Fire. Could it be a game changer for schools?

We haven't tried it yet -- though at least one of our staff members has an order in for one when its released in November. Everyone is waiting to see what it's like hands-on. As for the App sharing, Amazon has allowed some sharing of other things (such as loaning Kindle books out), but as for Apps? We've heard some rumors and speculation so far ... We'll keep you updated though!

I have a Kindle and right now am not in the market to buy more technology for the fun of trying it. Has anyone had a chance to try one of these out? Do they have a solution to a school purchasing an App and being able to use it on multiple devices?

Things change. A device called the PC was once the "industry standard" but that's not the case so much any more. Amazon has the resources, the interface and the capabilities to have a bigger, better, badder store for Apps than Apple. And given the ridiculous steps that go into getting an App for the iPad approved, it will be more appealing for the makers of educational apps to create for the Kindle Fire.

Amazon knows how to sell. The other guys just built products. RIM falsely thought the Blackberry audience would buy the Playbook -- everybody else had no plans. The Kindle quickly became the dominant e-reader. The Fire obliterates the color Nook (more expensive, less features) and likely destroys the Nintendo DS and the PSP. No school will ever buy an iPad again. There's no way to justify the price. The Fire now becomes a defensible purchase for parents as it's cheap, can do all the educational stuff and it can play games/entertain kids on trips, etc.

The Kindle Fire changes everything. It's a tablet that does nearly everything an iPad does that costs $199 out of the gate. Yes, it runs Android (a highly modified version) which is not anywhere near as great as iOS, but at this price with Amazon behind it, they will sell more before launch than Apple has sold put together.

It will still be a second-fiddle to iPad. Apple is the industry standard. This will put Amazon slightly ahead of the Galaxy and Playbook and all the other knock-offs, but still firmly behind the iPad.
