Handling Students' Death
Submitted by Alexis on Thu, 04/12/2012 - 09:20
What's the best way to respond when a student passes away? Should the school send a letter to all parents, and if so, what should be in the letter? Anyone have a sample letter to share?

The first step is to get support in place for the staff and students who will be so closely impacted by the death. Call in counselors (drawing from sister schools, if need be) to be available for students and teachers. Organize something memorial-related so that the school community can grieve together. Also, it is important to inform the parents as soon as possible. This is the time to active your auto message system and contact all the parents to alert them of the passing and what the school will be doing for students and teachers.
