Pre-K, K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-10, 11-12, Special Needs This multi-purpose template was built from a Microsoft Word template (there are all kinds included in your software - choose "new" then select from options included double sided bookmarks). This simple tool has uses in grades K-12 and in virtually any subject where you are teaching students. Here are a few ideas: Ride on the Reading Train (K-2) - have students use this template to create a simple book review (rear) and recommendation (front). Post them with clips on a railroad track made of balsa wood or twine and let students retrieve, read over and create "I want to read next" list, based on friend's suggestions. The tickets are convenient to carry to the "author chair" in writer's workshop to share during presentation. A Ticket to Ride (middle school) - can be used in vocabulary instruction (synonym searches), word choice activities (writing), or even a twist on "diagramming sentences" where various parts of speech are singularly written on tickets and students either remove the requested part of speech (verb, adjective, etc.) from a sentence strip made of tickets OR combine their tickets to create complete sentences with sentence variety or create complex sentences, evaluate independent and dependent clauses, etc. The sky's the limit - all with one simple tool. Make a PDF of tickets so that students can use Powerpoint or Word to do these activities virtually. |

6, 7, 8, 9-10, 11-12 The Skin Cancer Foundation introduces Sun Smart U, available for free download on the Foundation’s website, http://www.skincancer.org/education. Sun Smart U is an interactive education program that meets National Standards for both middle school and high school. The program includes a robust website for teachers and a free downloadable lesson plan gives educators everything they need to teach students how to make sun-safe choices that are vital in preventing skin cancer, the world’s most prevalent cancer. Students will learn the importance of incorporating a proper sun protection regimen (including seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and using broad spectrum sunscreen) into their everyday lifestyles. They’ll additionally learn about the dangers of tanning through the real-life story of a young woman with Stage III melanoma. Sun Smart U includes: a True/False activity to gauge students’ existing knowledge of skin cancer; real-life video segments relaying the story of a young woman’s struggle with melanoma; an animated segment explaining “Sun Smart Steps;” and a quiz that helps students identify their skin type according to the Fitzpatrick scale, and then matches them with a recognizable celebrity. The program can be taught in one or two class periods and is available as a PowerPoint presentation, as well as in interactive whiteboard formats SMART and Promethean. Materials are downloadable, printable and projectable to make it easier to adapt the curriculum to best suit your classroom’s needs.
