It seems everyone has something to say about the Common Core these days. Is your district implementing the CCSS? What’s your taken on the standards? What are the challenges of implementation?
As a teacher, I find the common core helpful to guide what I need to teach and to make sure I align what I want to teach to it. That said, I am concerned at the intensity and make it or break it scare tactics it elicits, especially in families. My daughter and son-in-law are very upset with it because they don't want their children coming home not liking school and physically sick because of the high stakes testing. We can try to pretend this isn't happening, but the fact is that smart and capable children are getting physically and emotionally sick from the pressure teachers have to place on them to pass the high stakes test. This is counter-productive in many ways to the reason for school in the first place. So basically I am torn between the need to know and to produce quality students and the need to let school be the best time of your life!
